Gods & Beings of the Norse World
The powers, peoples, and presences found within Norse tradition
The surviving sources do not give us one tidy, agreed-upon pantheon. The names come to us through poetry, sagas, place names, inscriptions, archaeology, and medieval writers recording traditions that were already changing. Some belong to the Æsir or Vanir. Others are jötnar, ancestors, land beings, personified forces, animals, or members of older and less easily defined groups.
Those boundaries are not always clean. A figure may descend from the jötnar and still live among the gods. Someone named as an enemy in one story may become kin, spouse, teacher, or ally in another. The Norse world was built through relationship, and those relationships were rarely simple.
Modern retellings often flatten these figures into a single role. Óðinn becomes wisdom. Þórr becomes strength. Freyja becomes love. Loki becomes chaos. The surviving stories give us something far more complicated. They show beings shaped by obligation, conflict, desire, sacrifice, kinship, reputation, and consequence.

These pages are not meant to provide one final personality profile for each name. Norse tradition does not preserve every figure equally, and the sources do not always agree. Where the evidence is incomplete, that uncertainty will remain visible.
