One-of-a-Kind Bone, Wood and Copper Talisman Necklace | Handmade Statement Jewel
This piece came together slowly, because every choice changed the balance of the next. I kept holding it up, turning it, changing the framework, and watching how the materials moved together until it finally settled into the shape you see here.
I began with the central piece of wood, preserving its grain, worn surface, darkened areas, and natural irregular shape. I passed a copper bar through it, then heated the ends until they softened into those rounded, molten tips. Every copper loop around the bar was shaped by hand. There are no manufactured bails or ready-made focal settings holding this together.
The two natural animal jawbones hang from chain on either side of the wood. I worked with their existing shapes rather than trying to make them match. The chain continues beneath the wood and connects into the back of the piece, allowing the jaws to move while keeping them gathered into the overall design.
Below the wood, I added a narrow drop of natural stone and copper beads. I chose warm, earthy colors that belong with the grain of the wood and the aged copper without pulling attention away from the bones.
Every part of this piece was handled, shaped, aged, placed, and assembled by me. The copper is intentionally irregular. The jawbones carry their natural markings. The wood still looks and feels like wood. I did not try to polish away the evidence of what these materials are or how this was made.
This is a substantial piece of wearable art, made for someone who likes their jewelry strange, earthy, and unmistakably handmade. It closes with a leather tie at the back, which gives some flexibility in how high or low it is worn.
You will receive the exact piece shown in the photographs. There is only one.
Materials: naturally shaped wood, natural animal jawbones, hand-worked copper, antiqued chain, natural stone beads, copper beads, and leather.f
